About

The Tarbell Center for AI Journalism supports journalism that helps society navigate the emergence of increasingly advanced AI.

Journalism will play a crucial role in society’s transition to a world with more powerful AI. As technology advances, Tarbell is committed to supporting independent journalism that demystifies the debates around this technology, holds the companies and people building it to account, and fosters the discourse necessary to chart a path that benefits society.

Our Principles

The following principles motivate our work:

  • Independence. We believe that good journalism happens when it is free from commercial incentives or at the whims of billionaires. Our donors do not exert any editorial control over our work, and we do not exert any editorial control over our fellows or grantees. View our complete editorial independence policies.

  • Journalism for good. We believe that journalism, when done well, can be a powerful force for good. We exist to help journalists achieve their goals of holding power to account and informing the public.

  • Truth-seeking. We believe in changing our minds and strive to impartially seek the truth. Tarbell Fellows dedicate significant time to carefully considering and reflecting on their beliefs, aiming to be guided by reason and evidence, even if they challenge preconceived notions.

Editorial Independence

Editorial independence is a core value for Tarbell. Our grantees and fellows maintain complete autonomy over their reporting, guided by journalistic standards rather than ideological preferences. While Tarbell’s staff members and funders may have their own views about AI, the work we support is independent and reflects a diverse range of perspectives. Ethics and Standards

Tarbell holds all of our staff, fellows, and grantees to a set of ethics and standards concerning coverage, conflicts of interests, and political activities. These policies join the guidelines of Transformer and our partner outlets to ensure journalistic and organizational integrity is prioritized by all of our programs.
