Tom Howarth

Tom Howarth is a science and technology journalist covering artificial intelligence at Science in Washington, D.C. Before joining Science, he was trends editor at BBC Science Focus, and his reporting has also appeared in The Times, Newsweek, Trellis (formerly GreenBiz), and Geographical Magazine, among others. In 2026, he was highly commended in the Science and Technology Writer category at the British Society of Magazine Editors awards. Tom holds a master’s degree in advanced chemical engineering from the University of Cambridge. Before moving into full-time science journalism, he worked in science communication at the European Southern Observatory in Germany, bringing astronomical discoveries to a general audience.
